5 - Chuck goes to Washington
Our good friend Chuck is a regular listener – sometimes he is our only listener. He even took the plunge by subscribing on Mixcloud Select, which I’m not totally sure I understand. Anyway, we were pretty excited to hear he was taking a new job in Washington. D.C.
You could do endless shows on Washington D.C., and maybe we will by the time it is all said and done. D.C. has a long and singular history as the center of an incredibly important nation. But it doesn’t exist in a vacuum – both regional and international influences dot the playlist.
The two biggest exports from D.C. have been go-go music and several variants of hardcore punk. Both inform each other and blend, but they are also polar opposites in some ways – short songs, long songs; city, suburb – in a way that makes sense in D.C.
As I always say: I’m not an expert. This is a conversation. We’d love for you to share your experiences with D.C. and its music. Correct us, criticize us and collaborate. Most importantly, chat or comment with us.
Notes
Duke Ellington: Still underrated.
Chuck Brown deserves much more credit than he ever received, too.
Some clips from D.C. media and radio scattered throughout.
